About Punta Gorda Florida
Punta Gorda is located comfortably between Sarasota and Ft. Myers in Southwest Charlotte County and is the County Seat, founded in 1882 as the Town of Trabue. In 1887 the name changed to Punta Gorda, which is Spanish for “Fat Point” and was formally incorporated in 1900. Beginning in the 1890’s, Punta Gorda became an important port for shipment of cattle to Cuba. Punta Gorda has had its share of challenges beginning in 1905 when most of the city was destroyed by fire. Later in 2004 it was extensively damaged by Hurricane Charley which made landfall directly in Punta Gorda. Since 2004 the city has been restored and revitalized and includes wonderful amenities such as Laishley Park Marina, Harborwalk and Linear Park. Punta Gorda’s easy laid back lifestyle and acres of waterfront properties include a host of fantastic restaurants and eateries that bring visitors from around the world.
